 No to uranium mining

No to uranium mining

THE Western Australian Government will have our blood on its hands unless it retracts its policy to mine uranium in this State.

A recent poll showed two-thirds of Western Australians are opposed to the uranium mining which our new State Government intends to promote.

Not content with an already wealth-expanding employment-raising mining boom, the new coalition intends to dig up the State’s uranium, despite the dangers attached to this deadly mineral.

Uranium mining is no answer to climate change as mining and transportation use huge amounts of fossil fuels and water, with carbon emissions equal to those created by the use of gas.

There is no safe way of storing nuclear waste, which has a radioactive half-life of over 250 thousand years.

Nor do mining companies tell their workers, or the public of the deadly radon gas emitted from their mines, or of artesian ground-water and eco-system contamination by radioactive tailings.

Accidents happen at nuclear power stations throughout the world frequently and are hushed up.

Uranium is still used to create nuclear missiles, and some nuclear waste is recycled to create depleted uranium (DU) weaponry.

Such weaponry was used in Iraq and the Balkans and has also been tested in Australia, though–not surprisingly–there are no publically available records of where and when the DU weapons were used.

Despite the continued misuse of uranium, industry lobbists continue to wield their agenda through governments and media propaganda.

More than quarter of a million years of major radioactive contamination for 50 years extra wealth until uranium stocks dwindle?

Is this a trade-off a sane, well-informed person would consider?

Renewable energies, which would create jobs and wealth for thousands of years are a readily available alternative to nuclear and fossil fuels, only requiring political will to be implemented.

We must ask for a full open scientific debate upon this matter, and then a fully informed public referendum.
