MANY juniors, cadets and grommets from Margaret River took part in the second State surfing round in Geraldton on the weekend 14-15th June.
The arduous trip was rewarded with great surfing conditions on Saturday.
The competition was held at Head butts, a beach about 5km south of Flat rocks.
It was offshore nearly all day with contestable 1-3ft conditions.
Good beach break conditions offered rippable rights and lefts.
In the U/16 girls Ella Massie, Hannah Massie and Bronte Macaulay competed in the division.
In a closely contested final Bronte held her nerve and took out the final from Mikala Greene of Dunsborough.
Hannah Massie frustrated a very credible fourth.
Bronte’s win claimed her the U/16 state title after winning the first round at Huzza’s earlier in the year.
In the U/14 boys Oliver Lee, Josh Bourke, Jack Robinson and Shaun Greene were representatives from the Margaret River area.
In a tight final Jack Robinson won the day with Shaun Green in third and Josh Bourke an impressive fourth.
The State title is wide open with both Jack and Shaun having a win apiece with the third and final round to be held here in August.
In the U/16 boys locals Creed McTaggart, Shaun Greene and Jack Robinson were keen to show their talents.
In one final Creed scored a 9-6 on a bomb wave to combo the pack and register the win.
Jack Robinson, definitley taking it to the big boys finished second, while Shaun Green was knocked in the semis.
Creed wrapped up the State title by winning both the first and second round.
Both he and Bronte have blocked their places in the State team for the Aussie titles to be held in December in Margaret River.
In the U/18 girls, the Macaulay sisters put on an enthralling battle.
In the final Laura finished a second to Felicity Pelmateer, with wave selection being the difference.
Bronte Macaulay, doubling up finished fourth in the final.
The State title is neck and neck with both Felicity and Laura both having a first and second.
In the blue ribbon U/18 boys Keeda Scully, Bohdi Sutton, Jethro Hedstrom and Matt Baldock competed from the district.
Matt Baldock made the final but his wave choice let him down a little and he finished third.
Jake Fawcett of Geraldton won it from Davy Maynard and from Trigg.
Matt has a slender lead in the title race and it will go down to the wire between him, Jake and Davy in the third and deciding event.
The standard of surfing was very high all weekend and the local groms, cadets and juniors showed there is a bright future for surfing from this area.
A special thanks to all the parents and friends, especially Frank Hayter, who ran a second tonk to allow the event to be finished on the Saturday due to inclement weather being forecast for Sunday in the third round early August hopefully at Lefties.
Keep surfing.
