Polocross riders flys club colours

8/10/2008 9:57:00 AM
THE Margaret River Polocrosse Club colours were on display for the first time in eight years on the weekend with a team heading up to Walkaway for the Greenough tournament (27th and 28th).

With the polocrosse nationals only two weeks away and this being the last compulsory training for the WA teams it was a large turnout with 38 teams and over 240 horses.

Making the nine-hour trip for Margaret River were Asha Maguire, Aaron Evans, Kim Maguire, Zoe Martin, Shannon Wolfenden and Scott Maguire.

Legendary club captain, coach and mentor Darren Martin also made the long haul as he is a member of the WA open mixed team who will compete against the rest of the country between October 13 and 19.

While the Margaret River club has a long and distinguished history it had been somewhere around the 15 year mark since the green and gold strip had been seen up at the Walkaway grounds (and we were fairly sure the shirts were designed around that era too) prompting a few of the locals to wonder where the team came from.

Saturday morning’s game came around and first up it was against Twin Pines with Margaret River coming away with a win.

The first chukka of Asha, Aaron and Kim combined good midfield team work.

The second chukka of Scott, Shannon and Zoe also combined well with many a Twin Pines attack spoilt at the line by the pressure applied.

Saturday afternoon’s game was against Irwin and again Margaret River got across the line putting them into a three way round robin final on Sunday that was taken out by the Perth team.

Finishing the weekend on a good note, Zoe Martin won the D Grade Champion Pony award on Dakota.

Margaret River Polocrosse Club will be holding their carnival on November 22 and 23.
