JESTER’S Flat Polocrosse Club narrowly missed winning their first D Grade Carnival on South Midlands Polocrosse Carnival, held at Muchea on the weekend.
After winning two minor round games easily and making a great comeback after being down in the third game, the Jester’s Flat No 1 D Grade team, consisting of Andrew Poulsen, Tom Lumston- Captain, Phil Strapp, Megan Booth, Lucy Brennan and Kim Maguire lost to South Midlands in the Grand Final on Sunday.
With great teamwork and determination, Jester’s Flat were only two goals down going into the final chukkas of the game.
The more experienced South Midlands team kept the pressure on and Jester’s Flat rose to the occasion.
A gallant tussle to the end, Jester’s Flat lost by only four goals at the final whistle.
Many members of the team excelled with their polocrosse skills and the finals experience will definitely be put to good use in the future.
The D Grade No 2 team of Sue Gregory, Lynda Willmott–Captain, Tanya McLean, Erin Hutton, Bill Darnell and Carlee Johnson never won any of their three games for the carnival but won a few chukkas against more experienced teams, which they were pleased about.
With each game played, all players and horses improved and some good polocrosse was witnessed.
A few team changes exposed some hidden skills and there was plenty of determination from everyone.
Many horse/rider combinations in the team were playing at their first carnival and by the last game were displaying some great skills.
Jester’s Flat E Grade Team of Asha Maguire, Irene Sanday–Captain, Ebony Darnell, Jess Green, Sophie Meagher and Gemma Bayens recorded one win and two losses for the weekend but were very competitive in their games.
As with the D Grade No 2 team there were some new horse/rider combinations and Sophie Meagher was playing at her first Carnival.
Saturday’s games recorded two losses but great team efforts and some good skill work kept them in the games.
The Sunday morning game against Perth saw everyone step up to the challenge to record a comfortable win.
Irene Sanday led her junior team members by example and the girls never let her down.
Jester’s Flat Polocrosse Club Captain, Paul Brennan never had time to rest over the weekend, coaching not only the three Jester’s Flat teams but also coaching the State Open Men’s Team to a resounding victory in the A Grade Grand Final.
Other than a good collection of bruises, no injuries were recorded to either players or horses, but plenty of experience and knowledge was gained from the carnival.
Eighteen tired, but pleased players returned home to prepare for their next outing.
Jester’s Flat will next be represented at the Twin Pines Carnival, to be held at Northam, in three weeks’ time.
