Mountain biking a popular choice

9/07/2008 9:26:00 AM
THROUGHOUT term two, Margaret River Senior High School students participated in an in-class mountain bike time trial series.

Students gained progressive points based on personal placing for each trial.

At the end of the series student Charlie Smith took out first place honours with 159 points and Harry Hick came runner-up on 151 points.

The students won $100 and $50 vouchers respectively to spend at Margaret River Cycles, a long term supporter of the high school’s program.

Not far behind were Sonny Beruldsen, who was third on 102 points, and Sollee Morris, fourth on 87 points.

The mountain biking program has now been running for five years at the high school as part of the outdoor education course, and teacher Stuart Kupfer-Hollis says students learn more than cycling skills.

He says the mountain biking in particular shows teenagers a healthy lifestyle pursuit in the Margaret River region.

“Leadership, interpersonal skills and fostering and developing healthy leisure pursuits were all beneficial outcomes for students,” teacher Stuart Kupfer-Hollis said.

“With the quality and quantity of tracks a short distance from town, particularly around the Wharncliffe Mill area, it is no surprise that a lot of local youngsters–not just Year 10s–are blazing the trails.”

For more information regarding mountain biking in the region, phone Shane Hadley of Margaret River Cycles on 9758 7671.
