Margaret River Tigers 10.16 (76) d Augusta Karridale Magpies 5.4 (34)

THE Magpies home game was played in cold blustery conditions in which the strengthening westerly wind was always going to play an important part in the outcome of the game.

Tigers Seb Newall and Shaun Green began the game strongly and Magpie Stephen Elson took a saving mark at full back early in the game as the teams tested each other out.

The Magpies then had a period of forward dominance but were unable to give the goal umpire reason to wave more than one flag.

Tiger Shaun Green took a big mark in the goal square before kicking the opening goal of the game.

He then followed this up with an even better mark in defence to deny the Magpies a kick on goal.

Magpie forward Andrew Martin showed the defensive side to his game to create some space for Jordan Payne to kick long for the Magpies’ first goal.

Early in the second quarter Magpies defenders Gary Shawcross, Charlie Henare and Jacob Carlon were effective in blocking the Tigers going forward.

Team-mate Jason Price took a great overhead mark, passed the footy to Tom Hastie who moved the ball quickly to Jackson Ellis who kicked long towards goal.

The ball came off the pack and Magpie ruckman Sam Rogers crumbed the ball and snapped for another goal to the Magpies.

Hard work by Tigers Brodie Ross and Kody Hooson was rewarded when Will Young kicked a great goal which was followed soon after by a goal to Brodie Ross.

Tiger Maui Murphy then had a burst of dominace in which he took a couple of telling marks and kicked one goal.

His team-mates Riley Holley and Jordan Oakes then combined to create another goal late in the quarter.

Although the Magpies had use of the wind in the third quarter, the Tigers were the team having shots on goal early in the term, although only Kody Hooson kicked truly.

The Magpies then began to make better use of the wind and through quick and precise ball movement, Tom Hastie, Jack Challis and Mitchell Payne were able provide Jackson Ellis with the opportunity to kick a much needed Magpie goal.

This goal was followed by some brilliant defence by Magpies hard men Josh Nelson, Jacob Carlon, Gary Shawcross and Charlie Henare before Tom Hastie and Andrew Martin moved the ball forward quickly to small forward Tyson Warnke who provided Jackson Ellis with another opportunity to goal for the Magpies.

This period of Magpies dominance was finally broken when Tigers Riley Holley, Creed Griffiths, Will Young and Kody Hooson all lifted their work rate and fast running Seb Newall kicked an important consolidating goal for the Tigers.

The Tigers came out of the three quarter time huddle all fired up and with the aid of the wind, completely dominated the last quarter.

“Mr Invisible”, Madison Stoveld, appeared from nowhere to kick the opening goal.

The Magpies were now under incredible scoreboard pressure before goals to Tigers Will Young, Maui Murphy and Seb Newall put the result of the match beyond doubt.
